Crete
Heraklion lives up to its status as the capital of Crete, offering a wealth of holiday fun, archaeological treasures, wonderful Cretan food and a wide selection of beaches. The Z Suites is only 20 minutes away from Crete’s capital, or 25 minutes via the seaside route.
Heraklion is located near two major archaeological sites, Knossos Palace and Phaistos Palace, making it ideal for history lovers. The region also has many interesting sites to visit, including museums, fortresses, and various monasteries. Some of the most interesting museums are the Archaeological Museum, the Natural History Museum and the Museum “Nikos Kazantzakis”. Regarding the monasteries, we would recommend the monasteries of Panagia Kaliviani, Saint George Epanosifis and Odigitria Monastery. Next to the modern center of Heraklion is the Old Town filled with narrow, steep streets from the Venetian and Ottoman rule. The entire city center is enclosed within the imposing remains of the old Venetian City Walls, while the Venetian fortress, “Rocca a Mare” is located in the port of the city and awaits your visit.
Heraklion has many beaches that showcase the beauty of the Cretan natural scenery. Many of the beaches are well-organized with sunbeds, umbrellas, and watersports facilities, while others remain unspoiled and secluded, some reachable only by foot or by boat. Some of the best beaches are Matala, Agia Pelagia, Malia, Agiofaraggo which is nudist-friendly, and Lygaria which is accessible for wheelchair users.
Lastly, Heraklion is the perfect starting place for day or half-day tours around Crete and the surrounding islands. A day tour to Spinalonga, Elounda, and Agios Nikolaos islands is a must, considering their great history. Nature lovers can enjoy a challenging trek through one of the longest and most famous gorges in Europe, Samaria Gorge, which separates the White Mountains, and is filled with thousand-year-old forests. Imbros Gorge is ideal for beginner hikers, with an easier and shorter trail.
